Proposing in Istanbul

Every year we help couples who have flown into Istanbul with a ring in their luggage and one question on their mind: where, and how, do I actually do this? This is the guide we wish they'd had before they landed — the honest version of where to propose, what it costs, when to time it and how to keep it a secret until the moment arrives.

Where is the best place to propose in Istanbul?

For most couples, the answer is the Bosphorus at sunset, aboard a private yacht. You get the whole strait to yourselves, the skyline of two continents wrapped around you, and complete privacy for the moment itself — no crowds, no waiter hovering, no strangers filming on their phones. It is also the most forgiving setting to plan around, because the yacht sails to the light rather than waiting for it.

If sailing isn't your thing, the strong runners-up are a rooftop in Karaköy or Galata, where you can see Europe and Asia at once, and a waterfront restaurant in Ortaköy or Bebek with a table set slightly apart from the room. The Maiden's Tower, lit at dusk, makes a backdrop that turns up in more of our couples' photos than any other single landmark.

What does it cost to propose in Istanbul?

Most proposals we arrange land between €450 and €2,500. A candlelit dinner at a Bosphorus-front restaurant starts around €499; a private sunset yacht with a photographer, flowers and champagne starts around €1,299; and the full laser-message experience, where your question is projected in light across the water, runs to about €2,499. When is the best time to propose?

Sunset, in the hour before dusk. The light is at its warmest, the city's lights begin to switch on across the water, and a yacht timed to be mid-Bosphorus as the sun drops gives you the most cinematic version of the moment. Across the year, April to October is the reliable window; midsummer evenings are busiest, so sunset yacht slots in July and August book out first. Give yourself two to three weeks to plan comfortably — though if your date is sooner, we have put a full proposal together in 48 hours.

How do you keep the proposal a surprise?

This is the part we obsess over. From the first message, we correspond only with the person planning — never the one being proposed to — and we time the setup so she arrives to a finished scene rather than watching it being built. On a yacht, the décor goes up before you board; at a restaurant, the table is dressed just before you're seated. The photographer is briefed and in position in advance, so nothing about the evening tips your hand until you're down on one knee.
